The railway was introduced by the British during the mid – 19th century. This mode of transport caught on fast and proved to be quick, economical and convenient. The first passenger train service was inaugurated between Bori Bunder, Thana and Bombay, covering a distance of 34 kilometres. Today the Indian Railways has grown by leaps and bounds and offers luxury services, are a part of the World Heritage Site by UNESCO and diligently cater to social services too with a ‘Hospital on Wheels’ venture.
